ARTIST’S BIO Pauline Southard fell in love in love with photography at age 13 when she first picked up a camera. Fascinated by physics and astronomy, her first subjects were the stars and planets she photographed through her telescope. A 1980 graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology, Ms. Southard has operated her own studio, Lady Kat Photography, in Freeport, for the past seventeen years, specializing in fashion, portrait and illustrative photography. Her images have won six national awards from the Professional Photographers of America, been displayed at numerous state exhibits, and featured in Creations Magazine. In 2005 she won a solo showing of her work at the superb exhibit hall in the Freeport Public Library. In 2006, her mixed media image “Alley Cat” was chosen by the Coastal Art League of California for their national exhibit, “Through a Lens, Textures of Our Lives.” In her early thirties, Ms. Southard discovered her own aptitude for divination and other metaphysical practices, and soon began an additional career as a professional astrologer, teacher, healer, psychic and medium. Within the last year she began to work with mixed media after taking drawing and watercolor classes. This series, “Miracles,” was created in response to Walt Whitman’s “Poem lyrics of Miracles” using digital cameras, Photoshop and Corel Painter, in locations ranging from the artist’s bathtub to Freeport’s Hudson Canal to Zanzibar, Tanzania. Pauline Southard combines her artistic and metaphysical gifts to craft images that illuminate the magic that lies just beneath the surface of everyday life.
